One can't help but behold this adorable face...The Top Room is happy to welcome back the beautiful Ida Mariana this weekend. Catch her on Friday with Top Room Daddy, David Gomes with his Trio and on Saturday with Eye2Eye Jazz Mix, after a 2 month hiatus from the joint!
Get yourselves in gear to listen to this mellifluous voice that is making its presence felt more & more after years of her self-imposed exile from the music scene. If you have a penchant for hearing the perennial jazz standards, make a date with Ida & the cats this weekend.
And, in an attempt to keep this precious venue alive, we are revising our weekend charges. Starting from the 9th of Feb, our normal Fridays & Saturdays will see a flat RM20 cover with no drink included. However, our Sunday jazz jams are still free from conditions. And I think that it's finally gaining momentum after over 7 months. Like the saying goes... better late than never!
Well, it has been almost a year now of The Top Room surviving on love & passion for jazz. And though we realize that, globally, small jazz clubs are generally not money-spinners, there's only so much we at the club can hope to achieve by gritting our teeth, week in, week out hoping that 1) more people will discover, appreciate & patronize jazz, and 2) that those who do come to the club will turn the till enough to subsidize the cost of the music. [Hasn't happened yet :(] Though there are friends and supporters who gladly come & spend their money to sustain this noble artform, there are not enough of them to maintain a constant stream of people coming for each & every performance!
I think it's important to state though the fact that, even with our revised entrance fee, it is far more affordable to enjoy good live jazz here than in other parts of the world. Surf here and here and here to know what a blessed existence we lead. Ok... some may say, "Eh, how to compare... all those are big established names. Giants in the jazz world!" True. But they suffered their fair share of losses too, you know? The key is that they grew into the giants that they are through years of toil & perseverance for the music. They all went through the growing pains that are part and parcel of carrying the torch for jazz. And that's the common thread that links us all.
So, in closing, let me just tell you all that from this weekend, you will get to play a very important role in the future of Malaysian jazz and The Top Room. You can help nurture it by contributing a small amount (RM20 per entrance) in exchange for the privilege of being co-torchbearers for jazz, with us and the rest of the giants in the world!
